Statement and apparatus through reflection of five photographers
Outside the opposition of photography versus art, there exist, above all, photographic practices. Some make fuller use of the technical apparatus while others seek to become part of a greater artistic domain or one that is socially more »promising«.
Such disposition is evident in the work of five students of VIST - Photography department in Ljubljana. Group approaches the medium in a way, where they allow the medium itself to be expresed: as if the photographic setup began to reflect itself, as if the camera undertook to register its own qualities and parameters. Sara Kiršič allows the spectator to enter into apparently calm paysages, until we notice that they are »framed« with signs of human presence, and so we are instantly exposed to anxiety, alienation, isolation ... Bojan Mijatović constructs images (subjective »psychic interiors«) that are uncanny - that is, not surreal, but which give the feeling of being not quite of this world... Darko Sintič occupies himself with »geometry of nature« - modeling nature through viewfinder, transforming it, organizing it, working out the relationship of spaces, which are limited by photographic camera without any need to work on the »substance« itself... Peter Gorenšek focuses on architectural ruins and documents them under unusual lighting conditions. This way something that should »last« uncompromisingly becomes subjected to the fundamental paradigm of photography, where a photograph is understood either in terms of magical presence of that which is far away or vanished, or on the other hand, as an image which is artificial and fabricated as any other sort of sign. But such ruins are to be retained only by transposing them onto a reference medium... Bojan Radin gives us »methaphors for constantly shifting reality«. Shadows have a primordial significance, it is almost as if darkness, not light or air, is the substantive environment within which subjects move and breathe ...
The group shares a common interest in research of the ontological photography questions. Spectating their work one might have the impression, as if the very protographic medium were asking itself questions about its function and its raison d'être.
